Council Tells Staff To Remove Bayshore Signposts

Published: Jan 11, 2007

TAMPA - Three new signposts along Bayshore Boulevard soon could be taken down, city officials said Thursday.

The signposts were to hold signs directing drivers to Tampa General Hospital, but Tampa City Council members and residents objected, saying the posts are too big.

Two of the posts are along Bayshore's southbound lanes, north and south of the Davis Islands bridge. The other is along northbound Bayshore at Newport Avenue.

Roy LaMotte, city transportation manager, said the two signposts on southbound Bayshore could be replaced by one sign on the bridge over Bayshore. He said the signposts could be used elsewhere in the city.

LaMotte recommended that other signposts remain on Platt Street and Hyde Park Avenue.

Councilwoman Linda Saul-Sena, however, said the posts "are overkill" and out of place in the historical neighborhood.

Councilman Shawn Harrison said drivers must be able to find the hospital.

"I don't want to substitute aesthetic desire for what is a public safety need as well," he said.
