Hyde Park Hosting Artful Home Tour

TAMPA - The Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association and Tampa Realistic Artists have pooled their talents for a March 10 home tour that promises to be inviting and artistic.

"We're going to have artists at some of the seven houses on the tour," said Kathy Durdin, Realistic Artists president and neighborhood association member.

The artists will display their work and accept commissions to do an original watercolor of a child, house or pet for a donation to the artists group.

In addition to Durdin, the participating artists are Frank Bolock, Margaret Hylton, Terry Klaaren, Brigitte Mailahn, who paints on porcelain, and Jack Plimmer.

The artists also will sell a poster titled "The Porches of Historic Hyde Park" for $10. Durdin created the poster from photographs of porches, although not necessarily those on the tour.

"My criteria were that it had to have a seating area, it had to be open so you could see in, and then I was going for different architectural designs," she said. "I managed to get a Gator flag, a Seminole flag, a Bucs flag and an American flag in the photos, too."

Durdin and Realistic Artists member Roy Streeter put together a set of eight notecards featuring watercolor images of Hyde Park porches also priced at $10. On the back of each card are two or three sentences about the architectural significance of the porch, written by architect Roger Grunke, the neighborhood group's president.

The two groups will share proceeds from poster and notecard sales, Durdin said.

The tour is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Advance tickets are $16. Tickets are $20 on the day of the tour and available at Kate Jackson Community Center, 821 S. Rome Ave.
